"Fluoridation"
Overfeeds and MCL's
As of March 22, 2005,
everything changed. The NAS
Report states," After reviewing the collective
evidence on adverse health effects associated with
fluoride, our committee concluded unanimously that
EPA should lower the maximum contaminant level goal
for fluoride."
The
EPA Union, representing the scientists, researchers
and other professionals, opposes the practice
stating" Our members review of evidence over
the past eleven years, including animal and human
epidemiology studies, indicate a causal link between
fluoride/fluoridation and cancer, genetic damage,
neurological impairment, and bone pathology. Of particular
concern are recent epidemiology studies linking fluoride
exposures to lower I.Q. in children. As professionals
who are charged with assessing the safety of drinking
water, we conclude that the health and welfare of
the public are not served by the addition of ths substance
to the public water supply."
The
need for a Code of Ethics at EPA has been emphasized
time after time since the Agency began in 1970. This
need became critical when it published the Fluoride
in Drinking Water Standard in 1985. An investigation
by the EPA Union revealed that scientific support
documents for the health-based standard[ of fluoride
MCLs] were crafted to support a long-standing public
health policy. Objective scientific methods of data
collection and analysis were avoided in favor of presenting
information that agreed with current policy.
RMCLs [changed to MCL
goals in 1986] "...are non-enforceable health
goals which are to be set at levels which would result
in no known or anticipated adverse effects and which
allow an adequate margin of safety." [emphasis
added]
