Water
The frog does not
drink up the pond in which it lives.
- Chinese Proverb
Water
is essential for life.
Just 3 percent of the world’s
water exists as fresh water—2 percent is locked
in the polar ice caps; less than 1 percent resides
in freshwater lakes and streams.
Estimates of water use in the United
States indicate that about 408 billion gallons per
day (one thousand million gallons per day) were withdrawn
for all uses during 2000.
We drink very little of our drinking
water.
Generally speaking, less than 1%
of treated water produced by water utilities is actually
consumed. The rest goes on lawns, into washing machines,
into toilets and down the drains.
